National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai unveiled at Pujiang Innovation Forum

By Wang Mengqi

Scientists gather to solve pressing mathematical problems underlying industrial innovations.

On October 22, as one of the 13 National Centers for Applied Mathematics approved earlier this year by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai was unveiled at Pujiang Innovation Forum, an annual meeting held by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai's municipal government that brings together senior political leaders, academic and business elites worldwide.

The unveiling ceremony is held at the forum

Gathering scientists from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University and Tongji University and professionals from the private sector, the Center aims to solve, through industry-education cooperation, the most pressing and essential mathematical problems underlying integrated circuit, civil aviation, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, etc., and buttress the industry upgrade and socioeconomic development in Shanghai and Yangtze River Delta. In fact, the Center has already commenced research in integrated circuit and civil aviation.

Pujiang Innovation Forum this year also featured a sub-forum titled “Mathematics and Industrial Innovations” organized in the name of National Center for Applied Mathematics of Shanghai. During the panel discussion, scientists from universities and executives from tech enterprises contributed their expertise to the development of mathematics as a discipline and exchanged views on how mathematics can better solve practical problems in industries. “Industry and mathematics are different in their ways to express a problem. It is necessary to establish between the two a translation mechanism,” said Fudan professor Cheng Ji of mathematical sciences.

Panelists exchange their ideas at the sub-forum

According to an official document released by Shanghai’s municipal government in March 2019, the city will press ahead with reforms to boost innovation in science and technology and strengthen its support for research institutes and firms engaged in innovation. The document also states that the city is expected to become a global hub of innovation by 2035.
