On the afternoon of November 5th, the ceremony to appoint Dr. Francis Gurry as Professor Emeritus of Fudan University was held at the Law School in the Jiangwan Campus. Present at the ceremony were Chen Qun, Vice Mayor of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Zong Ming, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Wang Binying, Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Jiao Yang, Secretary of University Party Committee, and Chen Zhimin, Vice President of Fudan University.
The ceremony was hosted by Wang Zhiqiang, Dean of the Law School. Jiao Yang issued the letter of appointment for Dr. Francis Gurry and helped him put on the university badge. Chen Zhimin delivered a welcome speech for Dr. Francis Gurry and introduced his outstanding contribution in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) to the teachers and students. In his speech, Chen also thanked Dr. Gurry for his concern for IP and the law subjects in Fudan, and hoped that WIPO would give more support for Fudan in terms of personnel training and academic exchanges.
Dr. Francis Gurry said that he was honored to join Fudan University. He expounded the huge challenges and institutional changes in the world’s field of IP in recent years, emphasized the urgent need for the establishment of a new international IP system, and fully affirmed China's important role in the global economy and the field of IP.
Dr. Francis Gurry has been a member of WIPO since 1985 and served as the Director-General since October 1st, 2008. He has contributed greatly to protecting the global IP and promoting the cooperation and communication between China and WIPO.
