International students shine on the stage at Chinese poetry contest

On November 10, the 2019 Shanghai International Students’ Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest, themed “Poetry of Profundities, Ode to Friendship”, was held at Fudan University.

First held in 2017, the contest has drawn considerable attention and participation from international students in Shanghai since then. It carries out and implements the requirements of the 19th CPC National Congress on strengthening cultural confidence and developing a great socialist culture in China to show the charm of Chinese language and culture as well as the spirit of the times. Overseas students can also learn more about the traditional Chinese culture, and improve their language ability and their aesthetic qualities.


“Poem of China” by Shanghai University

The contest, centering on “celebrating the 70th anniversary of China’s founding with Chinese poetry and cementing ties among five continents via Chinese culture”, aims at promoting cultural exchanges and strengthening friendship among students from different countries through the exhibition of the students’ command of Chinese poetry.

“A Moonlit Night On the Spring River” by Shanghai Normal University

More than 300 overseas students from 18 universities entered for the competition, with 43 teams advancing to the second round. In the end, 18 performances from 13 universities reached the final. 

Two performances from Fudan “China, I love you” and “Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again” won the Best Performance Awardand the Most Creative Award respectively.

The event began with the group recitation of The Orchid Pavillionby students from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. 18 performances from over 30 countries were staged. 

Filled with youthful vigor and affection for Chinese traditional culture, the participants presented their favorite Chinese poems with standard Mandarin, appropriate body languages in various artistic forms such as playing musical instruments, singing and dancing, calligraphy, martial art, etc.
