In 2023, Fudan University initiated a one-year preparatory course tailored for international students, hosted by the International Cultural Exchange School (ICES). This comprehensive curriculum is crafted to offer training across five core subjects taught in Chinese high schools: Chinese, English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Serving as a transitional academic stepping stone, this program equips students with the essential foundation needed to embark on their undergraduate journey in China.
“I don’t want to paint a very concrete picture of my university life, because I want to let everything happen organically. To me, the uncertainty can also mean big surprises.” Cristina Zhang, freshman at Fudan’s School of Journalism and alumna of the preparatory program shared her perspective on college life with a touch of philosophical insight.

Having spent her childhood in China and later returned to Panama to stay with her parents, Cristina has now returned to China, her second hometown, eager to embark on the journey of discovery she has long been yearning for.
Finding her way to her dream university and dream city
For Cristina, Fudan University represents the epitome of her academic aspirations and a decision she holds in the highest regard.
“I love Shanghai for its vibrant atmosphere, and I have long dreamed about studying in Fudan.” However, her academic performance at the time was shy of getting her into Fudan, so her family advised her to remain in Panama as she had received offers from local universities. While Cristina acknowledged the ease that staying close to home would provide, her heart was set on experiencing the vibrant life at Fudan.
As an always optimistic one, Cristina decided to follow her heart. She chose to enroll in Fudan’s preparatory program, taking a leap of faith to pursue her dreams. “What truly motivated me to dive into the program was that I wanted to equip myself with the necessary competence to thrive as a qualified undergraduate here,” added Cristina.
Luckily, she turned her dream into reality a year later, and now she says her life has been “even more fun than expected”.
Discovering an ideal major for a soul with diverse passions
Unlike some of her peers who had predetermined, unwavering goals, Cristina took the time to explore and discover her true passions after joining the preparatory program. Thanks to Fudan’s supportive environment which encourages such a trial-and-error process, recognizing that true learning often comes from the journey itself, not just the destination, for Cristina, this period of exploration was far from a waste; it was an essential part of her growth.

“I enjoyed being an amateur in different fields, including dancing, singing and so on. I’m also a member of Fudan’s Ukulele Society.” Cristina joyfully shared her extra-curriculum activities, describing herself as a big fan of Samana, who was one of her classmates in preparatory class and a core member in FDANSO, Fudan’s dancing society.

Cristina’s journey of self-discovery significantly influenced her academic path. Initially, she set her sights on economics as her major for university. Yet, an unexpected turn occurred when she engaged in “China in My Eyes”, a photo contest held by Fudan International Students Office.
“I have always enjoyed recording my life, taking photos and travelling to places with cultural backgrounds I wasn’t acquainted with.” This love for storytelling and cultural immersion hinted at a potential interest in journalism. One day, she opened up to her class teacher about her thoughts, and received a warm and encouraging response that resonated deeply with her. When the time came to make her major decision, Cristina confidently put down “Journalism” on her application form, embracing the path that felt most authentic to her.
Now, she is weaving a clearer future plan. Cristina hopes to seek for a job that can bridge the differences and foster cultural exchange between nations, especially China and Panama.
Bridging the communication gap between Panama and China
The preparatory year marked a transformative chapter in Cristina’s life, where she said she “turned from an introvert into an extrovert”.
Transitioning to a new environment can often be a formidable challenge for many students in preparatory programs, and Cristina was no different. However, her initial hurdles were swiftly overcome through participation in ice-breaking activities designed for the cohort. She soon realized that her classmates were all friendly and interesting. In no time, they formed strong bonds.
Cristina, along with some of her friends, signed up for a speech contest held at Fudan University earlier this year in May. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “Juggling schoolwork with the demands of the competition was indeed a busy period, but it was incredibly rewarding.”
These experiences also motivated her to socialize with Chinese students in undergraduate study. “I was afraid there might be barriers, but actually it wasn’t that horrible.” Now, Cristina finds joy in forging connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This August, she lent her linguistic talents to a noble cause, volunteering as a translator at the Latin Auto Parts Expo in her home country of Panama. There, she bridged the communication gap between local exhibitors and Chinese attendees, showcasing her ability to facilitate meaningful exchanges across cultures.
“People in Panama know a lot about China, but generally Chinese people don’t know much about Panama.” With a burning ambition to showcase the rich tapestry of Panama to the world, Cristina is gearing up for her study in journalism. It will not be just a professional pursuit but a heartfelt mission to share the multifaceted cultures of both Panama and China that have become an integral part of her identity.
