Next year marks the 120th anniversary of Fudan University. On December 14, Fudan University 120th Anniversary Calendar (hereinafter referred to as “Fudan Calendar”) was officially unveiled, serving as a tribute to the university’s rich history and legacy.
Presented by Fudan University Archives and Fudan University Press, the Fudan Calendar, commemorates the pivotal events and notable figures that have shaped the university’s 120-year narrative.
The inception of this unique university history publication dates back to two years ago. Calendar, with its engaging and informal nature, is perfect for daily perusal, enabling readers to discover the pivotal moments of Fudan’s 120-year journey in brief intervals. In this way, extensive historical archives can be transformed into invaluable educational assets.
The editorial team worked for 9 months, gathering materials, interviewing experts, verifying details and then carefully selecting entries.
The graphic history of Fudan is evident-based. The editorial team relied on the university’s rich archival collection, using books like A Century of Fudan University: A Chronical Record and its sequel as primary sources, supplemented by materials from the Fudan University Yearbooks, the Fudan Newspaper, and the university websites. The team also included the latest research findings of Fudan’s history. The illustrations mainly come from archived photographs, with additional documents, letters, inscriptions, and media reports. Seasonal campus photos taken by photography enthusiasts are used as well.
Despite the limited text, the content covers all aspects of Fudan’s history, with every image and caption carefully matched. According to the publisher, a book typically requires three rounds of proofreading, but the Fudan Calendar underwent eight.
The cover and layout of the Fudan Calendar went through several revisions before finalized, adopting hardcover and half case binding. The hard cover features a festive, eye-catching color of red with gold-embossed text and the university’s logo in transparent pearlescent white. The inner pages are graced with a refined blue color. The slipcase itself is an elegant gold color, with iridescent silver characters.
The calendar serves as a bridge between the past and the present, embodying Fudan’s collective memory and nostalgia, while also reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the Fudan community for the future.
In 2025, let’s open the Fudan Calendar and embrace happiness together.
